Making Council Accountable
Making council accountable
by questioning spending and demanding a public-facing council that listens to local communities.
Actions
1. Undertake a review of the Supercity governance model. It is now more than 12 years since the eight former Auckland councils were amalgamated and there is need to look at what has worked and what needs attention.
2. Introduce participatory democratic processes, including citizens assemblies, youth assemblies, community co-design strutures and peoples panels, and build trust in the council decision-making process.
3. Introduce annual performance reviews for all elected members, including mayor, councillors and local board members, and make these available for public scrutiny.
4. Advocate for 4-year council terms to help support intergenerational thinking and long term decision-making.
5. Stand up to central government increasingly making decisions that affect how Auckland is shaped and how Aucklanders live their daily lives, where such decisions should be decidedly devolved to Auckland Council.
6. Continue to oppose Three Waters reform, particularly the inclusion of stormwater assets and managment that are inextricably linked to land-use planning functions of council.
