Transforming transport

Transforming transport

by building a modern public transport system on the Shore and across Auckland that offers more choice, connects us and gets us around easy and fast.

Actions

1.    Progress the next harbour crossing with my flagship project of light rail to the Shore connecting from Wynyard – Takapuna – Smales Farm/Hospital – Glenfield – North Harbour – to Albany.

2.    Implement a city centre cordon congestion charge in 2025 to coincide with the opening of the City Rail Link, Eastern Busway, NW Rapid Transit improvements, electric ferries and greater frequency and reach of bus services region-wide.

3.    Remove the Regional Fuel Tax upon introduction of congestion charging.

4.    Develop a new Bayswater ferry terminal to accommodate introduction of electric ferries and progress the next stage of Downtown ferry terminal upgrade programme to accommodate growth of the wider ferry network.

5.    Introduce 7 electric and/or hydrogen ferries by 2026, with first delivered in 2024.

6.    Focus on public transport frequency and affordability of fares, to ensure all urban communities have access to frequent public transport and fares that are affordable.

7.    Introduce staged fare-free public transport targeting those most in need. Let’s start with school and tertiary students and those in training (under 25 yrs) and Community Services Card holders, moving to full fare-free travel by early 2026 upon expansion of bus, rail and ferry infrastructure and service levels.

8.    Immediately introduce discounted inter-peak public transport fares to make better use of under capacity services and incentivise the spread of demand from peak services.

9.    Shake up Auckland Transport to make it a public-facing and accountable public service that listens and responds to customer needs.

10. Commit to the implementation of council’s Transport Emissions Reduction Pathway to give effect to council’s climate action plan - Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri - requiring a 64 per cent reduction in transport emissions by 2030.

11. Commit to safe seperated cycling with a focus on getting kids safely to schools and make cycling safer for all through separation from vehicles.

12.  Continue to roll out the Safe Speeds Programme to deliver on the Vision Zero goal to have no one die or be seriously injured on our roads by 2050.

13.  Connect Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga by inter-regional rail.

14.  Make the neccessary tactical decsion to resolve the location of a new Auckland port, develop a relocation plan and undertake an exciting rethink of the waterfront port land.

15. Restrict helipads in residential and sensitive environments by making the activity non-complying.
